Summer opens the door to all sorts of exciting adventures. You might have plans to seek fun in the sun by heading out on a road trip or camping trip, and you can count on us here at Jim Schmidt Chevrolet Buick of Delphos to help ensure that your car is ready for whatever lies ahead. Of course, summer also presents a variety of unique challenges to keep drivers on their toes. So, the best way to enjoy a safer driving experience this summer is to be aware of some of the top issues that can crop up to harry motorists during the summer.

Between weather changes and other risks and hazards, summer driving can be tricky. Here are some things to watch out for during your adventures.

Engine Overheating

If your engine overheats, you could be faced with a breakdown. Rising temperatures can make your engine more likely to overheat, so it's important to check coolant levels, belts, and hoses to ensure that your engine won't give up on you in the middle of a road trip. If your engine does overheat, pull over and call for help.

Tire Blowouts

When the temperature outside climbs, the air pressure in your tires does as well. As air pressure goes up in the heat, your tires expand. If the air pressure in your tires is too high, your tires run the risk of wearing out rapidly. They might even blow out due to the increase in pressure, which can be a major safety hazard.

The best way to avoid this problem is to check your tire pressure frequently and adjust as needed. You should also check your tires for damage or excessive wear and replace them if they become too worn.

Vacation Traffic

Are you planning on hitting the road this summer? There's a good chance that a bunch of other people had the same idea. Summer usually sees more accidents on the road, so be sure to be extra cautious if you're planning on spending more time on the road.

Pedestrians, Bicyclists, and Motorcyclists

People around Delphos are eager to get out and enjoy the weather, but not all of them are in cars. Many are on foot or astride bikes or motorcycles, so be wary of your surroundings and pay close attention to make sure that you aren't surprised by others around you. Be sure to drive cautiously and take things slow because the people around you might not notice that you're there.

Animal Activity

Animals are much more active during the summer, so you're more likely to see some kind of critter run out into the road in front of you. Most animals are the most active at dusk and dawn, so be extra careful during these times. Keep an eye out for animal crossing signs, and be sure to wear your seatbelt. If you drive at night, be especially cautious if you notice your headlights or high beams reflecting off animal eyes.

If an animal does jump out in front of you, don't swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid it.

Roadside Emergency Kit

While this isn't a potential summer driving hazard to watch out for, it's definitely something to keep in mind. If you find yourself in a situation that calls for you to pull over and either fix something or call for help, a roadside emergency kit can help you deal with a vehicle breakdown safely.

Some of the items that we encourage you to keep in your car as you drive around Delphos include:

  • First-aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Drinking water and nonperishable food
